So… What is Snapchat? Snapchat is a fun, exciting and cool app that you use to chat with friends and followers. Incredibly popular with teenagers and young adults, it is an app to send photos and videos to each other and have them “self destruct” moments after you have sent them. That, however is just the tip of the iceberg as Snapchat offers many other features that many people are still not aware of. This includes a story function where you can post pictures to a page that is viewable up to 24 hours. It gives a narrative of sorts of what is going on in your day. Another great feature is to follow publishers such as MTV and Coca Cola and see the things that they are getting up to. Perfect if you want to follow your favorite brands. Since then the name has become mainstream and is now one of the most used apps across the whole world.
The history of Snapchat – How it all began
So how did Snapchat become the giant it is today? Certainly not by magic or luck. Like so many new technologies, it came out of California. Stanford University to be exact. There were three friends, Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown however the history is somewhat murky about who came up with the ideas and put them into practise and has even been the subject of a lawsuit. The three of them worked on the app together and wanted to build something that wouldn’t embarrass you in the future and self destructing images was the perfect way to do this. No more emergency de-tagging of photos before a job interview. Growth happened quickly and by November 2012, one billion photos had been shared via the app.
Features of Snapchat
This is one of Snapchat’s most popular newest features. The ability to add an image or graphic to a video or image of your face. Sort of like a real time filter for the app. The app scans your face and then best determines where best to place the lense. The results are some hilarious photos that have been taken and shared around the world. Snapchat’s dog filter was incredibly popular with thousands across the world having floppy ears and wet tongues though it’s Bob Marley filter wasn’t so popular with people.
Another feature popular is the Face swap option, in the form of a lense, it digitally swaps the face part of the photo around with someone else who is in the photo. Very strange, but incredibly popular and is being used all around the world by all users. Some people are even using Face swap on their pets.
Discover is quite cool and it is a way to connect with brands small and big. On a page you are presented with a number of brands and by clicking on one, you can see the stories that they are sharing through a series of snaps. Each snap often contains an article and a video that you can watch or read in more detail. Many brands are on there inlcuding CNN, MTV, Buzzfeed.
Snapchat is the next big app if it is not there already. Millions of people around the world are using it and loving it. It is a really fantastic communication tool and really fun to use to connect with your friends and family. It is perfect for teens and young adults. Remember though, use Snapchat with caution, although the images and videos you send are said to be “self destructible” and this would seem totally harmless, the truth is that the images can be recorded and kept. So don’t use Snapchat to send anything that is confidential or potentially embarrassing that could be used against you in the future.
